Club & Track Details

The Guildford Model Engineering Society (GMES) was founded in 1954 and has been located on its site in the north east corner of Stoke Park since 1958. The society aims to develop, encourage and provide facilities for all aspects of the hobby of model engineering and promote fellowship between its members. Members’ interests vary widely and include railways at most scales, boats, clocks and scientific instruments, toolmaking, stationary and internal combustion engines and much more. Though members model engineering skills range from raw beginners to some of the finest craftsmen and women around all are treated with equal regard and valued for what they can contribute to the society as a whole. The main activities of the Society revolve around the 31/2”, 5” and 71/4” railways. The raised track is 1405’ in length and the ground level 71/4” track is 990’ long. All tracks are serviced by off loading points, sidings and steaming bays. An excellent engine shed backs onto a separate passenger carriage shed. There are two stations for use on passenger carrying days and the whole system is controlled by electric light signals. The Society has its own locomotives for use on driver training days and for passenger hauling on public open days. Both tracks are available for member’s own use, with a number of special events being held during the year. On site there is an extensive 16mm Garden Railway and developing G1 layout, plus a 4mm indoor layout. We also have a regularly used clubroom and a new workshop. Although our model railways are the most visible part of GMES they only represent a fraction of what we do with regular talks, outings and social meetings. Throughout the year we hold Public Open Days and our main annual feature is the Model Steam Rally & Exhibition in July.
