Bagnall boiler fittings

I am currently overhauling an MJ Bagnall saddle tank.Does anyone
know why studs and nuts are used to fix steam dome and clack valves to boiler and not bolts?

Probably following full size practice perhaps.

You could ask Alan Barsby at MJ Engineering. His contact number is 01252 890777.

I am doing a Bagnall reassembly project - quite tricky for my limited abilities! The drawings just show 2BA clearance holes on the dome. No mention of studs or bolts. Pretty sure the box with these bits in had bolts rather than studs.

I am building from the MJ drawings and they show the relevant holes to be blind and shallow (circa 1/4" to 3/8"). So, based on dimly remembered OND Engineering (40+ years ago) that shallow blind holes have studs to ensure they can be properly tightened, I have chosen to use studs. Also when the nuts rust on to the thread you can cut the nut off and you have something to get hold of to get the stud out.

Where are you guys based? Would very much like to see some of these locos in steam.

Full size practice would be studs, it's easier to remove a nut off a stud than it is a bolt, the plain portion of the stud also helps give a proper fit for the dome

Thanks for your replies,in my 40odd years in the Aviation industry
studs were very rarely used usually bolts of various characteristics, but as the prototype uses them I will fit them as per the drawing.
