Boiler Insulation

Having used loose weave fibreglass as a boiler insulator (beneath the cladding) in the past, I am looking for a better material which will bend to the shape of the boiler, firebox etc and not be so messy. Ideally a sheet of fibreglass approx 3mm thick would be good. Any ideas?

The best I've come across is refractory Kaowool. A ceramic fibre blanket, used for insulating pottery kilns. It comes in various thicknesses so only one layer is needed. Just wrap it round (wearing gloves) and tape it in place with common masking tape.

Thank you, Xz, for your very quick reply. I will wait and see if I get any more suggestions as I imagine all loco builders must have hit this issue in the past and it will be interesting to see if there is an optimum solution.
Thank you again

John

Kaowool, every time. It's a real no brainer.

Thank you both. Can you suggest a suitable supplier for small quantities?

A difficult one John, as I have never actually bought any, I just happened to have (past tense) a tame kiln maker, who supplied what I needed with the assurance that it would do the job. He was right.

I'm sure if you search online you will find someone. The biggest problem is gauging just how much you need. It is fine to go for some a little thicker than you require and squeeze it down to size, as long as you don't crush it completely flat.
