Tracks to the Trenches – 12 - 14 September 2014
In September 2014 the Apedale Valley Light Railway (North Staffordshire, UK) will host a major World War 1 commemoration event marking 100 years since the start of WW1.

I have made contact about the possibility of running a 7 1/4 track with suitable motive power, I should have a tin turtle finished later this year, I know of at least one other tin turtle not too far from me.

The question I have is how many WW1 locos do we have modelled in 7 1/4" gauge and would you like to be involved, 1, running on a portable track, and/or 2, an mini 7 1/4" gauge exhibition?

Hi Martyn,
Depending on how the repairs and repaint go on my Hunslet 4-6-0, there is a possibility that she may be available.

Nige
Now you have got a target date, it would be great to have a period steam loco for the portable track.

So at the moment we have myself and Keith confirmed with Nige's Hunslet subject to him repair her. Are there any other first world war trench locos out there?

Next year there are many big events to celebrate the centenary of the the war, if you have a suitable loco why not be part of this special event.

A reminder that I am taking a 7 1/4 track to this event and I am looking for any WW1 7 1/4 gauge rolling stock or locos to attend.

Confirmed so far are my Protected, including me with silly hat! George Coles is hoping to bring his WW1 Deutz Benzolok C XIV. Nick Burton's Simplex

33 days to go and 'Fritz' is almost recognizable as a Deutz Benzollok.
Just a cab to make; side doors; brakes; couplings; detailing; a controller. Bags of time!

Martyn. Pretty much finished. Certainly running, but still looking a bit too clean and fresh considering it has been in action long enough to have lost its sliding doors!

The event was great with loads going on, we were not over busy on the 7 1/4 track but had chance to chat to lots of people about our locos and 7 1/4 in general.

I agree the event was well thought out with plenty of different activities to watch. I enjoyed the re-enactments as well as the many locos and Tin Turtles that were there. Still trying to identify some of them now. Particularly the one that was in the crater. Can anyone help please?

The two 7 1/4 locos looked good and this was an opportunity to show the wider public our hobby.

Thank you and well done all!

Gilly,
Sadly I couldn't be there as planned, so don't know to which locos you are referring when you ask for identification. Do you have a picture or pictures which you could post here?
Best wishes

Hello Gilly
If you go to http://ww1-event.org/ the home page has the story of the Simplex in the shell-hole.
Hope this helps. If you need any other locos identifying let me know, either here or email direct.
Best wishes

Martyn
Thanks for that. Many differences identify this as a post-WW1 version. Nice to see a survivor.
Very little information about the petrol tractors - everybody loves steam (especially those looking for targets on the other side!)
