Miniature Railways in France

I've booked a family holiday in France in August, between Tours and Le Mans. Does anyone know of any miniature lines (7 1/4 or 5 inch) in that area (Western Loire) that would be worth a visit? Both my sons have taken the 7 1/4 bronze proficiency award and will hopefully do the silver this summer. We've been to quite a few lines in the UK, but it would be interesting to see what French miniature line are like. Thanks.

Dear Gavin,

There is a multi-gauge site near Blois. They are active every second weekend of the month in the season, so 14 and 15 August. Just Gurgle Circuit Vapeur Denis Papin, and you will get a comprehensive web-page. There are contact details, so there may be other dates on a one-off basis. There is a full-size set up near Chinon, but I heard they had some technical problems. Nevertheless, it's a good run! I will see if I can find out more about miniatures. The problem is that the French Confrérie des Amateurs de Vapeur does not publish a list of members'railways, so one tends to know only "local" ferrovipathes. Our Tinker runs currently at my local club, 90km away.....

Best wishes,

Oops! If you want a preview of the French scene, my friend Michel Haenggi - yes, he's French- runs a site with lots of images. The site, again by Gurgling, is Trains Vapeur Blayais

Hi

The modeling scene in France is a bit sparce compaired to England. I have lived in Brittany for nearly six years and only know of one but that is in Normandy. If you are here in August you would find a visit to the festival des artizans at Lizio well worth the visit although quite a treck from where you are staying. Why didn't you book with me for your holiday? I have a gite in central Brittany and I give discounts to club members.

Thanks for the info, gents. Armed with those tips I shall renew my Googling. Roger, I'd never thought of looking for foreign holiday accomodation through the society, but will certainly bear it in mind next time!

Gavin
Nearest track is theone given by malcolm carroll, it is Circuit Vapeur Denis Papin (CVDP) located at Chitenay about 50km east of Tours. It is south of Blois and lies midway between the D956 Blois to Contres road and the D764 Blois to Simbin road. There is awebsite for the railway at http//cvdpchitenay.free.fr or just goole in cvdp Chitenay. There is also a video clip on You Tube of the track. Chitenay can be found on page 76 in square C3 of the Michelin Tourist Motoring Atlas at 1/200 000 or 1cm = 2km scale.
Hope this is helpful.

Apologies for off-topic message

Malcolm (and Jan) - we lost your contact details when you moved to France. Can we get back in touch?
