Point Motor

Has any one used car wiper motor to operate points and if so what is the best way of wiring them up?, or is there a point actvator you can buy?

Ron,
What you need to do is to have something to limit the travel at either end, or they just go round and round. You also need a good spring in the operating mechanism so that you can trail though them as required. At Swanley, all our point motors are wiper motors, most have given many years reliable service.

Ron,
We have used wiper motors for many years at Sutton Coldfield quite successfully. If you require a ready made unit, the one marketed by Cromar White is excellent.

You could also use electric window motors, essentially the same as wiper motors but smaller. I have 7 in use and never had a motor failure in 15 years (touch wood!!).
I have uploaded a picture to the gallery showing one of the motors.

I use a wiper motor fitted with limit switches to stop it every 180 degrees. I also use a simple transistor + zener voltage regulator with it to slow it down suitably without sacrificing torque. There are springs in the system to permit trailing operatuion as spring points. It all works very well, and is in my case usually radio controlled by a key fob that the driver holds.
